FENSA / CERTASS Certification
On Installations

What are Fensa and Certass?

Fensa stands for Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. Certass stands for Certification and Self Assessment. They are schemes set up to ensure all replacement glazing in homes installed since April 2002 conform to current Building Regulations specifications. Anyone who installs replacement windows or doors has to comply with current thermal performance standards.

When having windows and doors replaced homeowners must ensure that they get a certificate of compliance. At the moment Conservatories do not require a certificate of compliance. This certificate may be obtained by using a Fensa registered business, a Certass registered business or by requesting the Local Authority Building Control to send an inspector to asses that the quality of the installation meets current guidelines. A fee is charged by the local authority to the consumer for this service.

The Fensa / Certass Certificate

When the time comes to sell a property, the purchaser's solicitor will ask for evidence that any replacement glazing installed since April 2002 complies with Building Regulations. There are currently two ways to prove compliance:

  1. a certificate showing that the work has been done by an installer who is registered with Fensa or a similar body.
  2. a certificate from the Local Authority Building Control stating that the installation has been approved under the building regulations.

All DGCOS Members are Fensa or Certass Registered.

All members of the DGCOS are registered with Fensa or Certass. Therefore, after completion of the works, the customer will be issued with a certificate of compliance which should be kept with all the legal documents relating to the property. This could be needed later should your local building control dept. wish to inspect your certificate or you wish to sell your house.
